URBANA - What's better than a beautiful fall day? A beautiful fall day along with some cold beer and hot chili. At least, that's what more than two-thousand people think.

Urbana's ninth annual international beer-tasting and chili cook-off attracted about 2500 people to the downtown area today.

Participants can sample up to 150 different types of beer from all over the world. In addition, nine different chili teams competed in the chili cook-off which represented roughly twelve different types of chili. BEER AND CHILI Fire It Up

From WAND 17 NBC

No Refusal Weekend in Macon County

Decatur, IL- Macon County authorities will be cracking down on drunk drivers this Labor Day weekend.

The Macon County State's Attorney says prosecutors and a judge are teaming up with police for a "No Refusal Weekend".

This weekend, if anyone stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence refuses to take a breath test, police can request a warrant on the spot. That warrant would require the driver to provide a blood sample to test their blood alcohol level.

Alcohol in the News; $770 Beer

From WAND 17 NBC

Not sure if this was actually on the news, but it's on their website. Everyone is talking about the real expensive beer. Odd that 12 bottles of beer could cause so much uproar.

$770 BEER

There were only 12 bottles made, and they sold out in four hours.

If you are interested in some of their other high alcohol beers, they are still available.

Alcohol in the news; Bartender training

Last night, several news stations ran spots about getting bartenders trained on how to spot fake ID's and serving to minors.

Alcohol Training

State Agents Meet Bar Owners

Oddly, both NBC and ABC interviewed the same person, Elizabeth Murphy, from Turtle Run or Snappers.

It sure would be nice if either of the stations talked about HOW to get the training, like providing a link to a website, instead of just saying that training was available.

In the promo for the news on WICD, they showed some stock footage from Radio Maria. Not sure who was serving, but I think Jacob was in the background.

The 'UnOFficIal' aftermath; armageddon came and went

News-Gazette

'Subdued' not the adjective for annual drinking festival, but final numbers show 'safe' gaining steam

CHAMPAIGN – Fewer arrests, fewer tickets, fewer medical calls and no major injuries during Friday's Unofficial St. Patrick's Day have Champaign public-safety officials feeling somewhat relieved about the annual bacchanal.
Wow, not only is that one of the world's largest headlines, but they used the word "bacchanal". Bacchanal means a drunken or riotous celebration. It relates to the word Bacchus.

A final tally of activity for Friday and early Saturday put the number of criminal arrests at seven, down from 15 last year; notices to appear in court for less-serious offenses at 265, compared with 351 in 2009; and medical calls at 28, compared with 33 last year.
7 arrests
265 citations
28 medical calls

With the tab for city ordinance violations ranging from $165 to $310, Champaign stands to gain more than $43,000 in revenue from fines, assuming all those ticketed plead guilty or are found guilty. Last year's police overtime cost taxpayers just over $10,600.
Wow, they actually put that this is a profitable event for the city.

Unofficial St. Patrick's Day end with fines, towed vehicles

Towing companies say the drinking event might just be their busiest day. They mostly pick up vehicles from city lots. Tatman's Towing hauled off about 70 vehicles, while Reynold's towed 256.

The Unofficial Hangover

"It's a little more tame this year, not going to lie it's not as fun," said Jordan Missner.

Students credit that to a 21 and over bar rule as well as a ban on pitchers and shots, as police put forth their best effort to crack down on binge drinking.

Post-Unofficial bar scene: 'Busier than a regular Saturday night'

On Saturday, the entry age for C-U bars returned to 19 years old.

Some students who were turned away on Unofficial could once again get into the bars.

Dan Kadlec, sophomore in Business, said he stayed away from the bars on Friday but not Saturday.

“I’m not 21, and I knew cops would be everywhere on Friday,” Kadlec said. “I didn’t want to risk it.”

CU Bars in the News; Illinois tax may help fund wine promotion

Illinois Tax May Help Fund Wine Promotion

From WAND NBC 17.

Champaign, IL - The Illinois wine industry wants some state tax money to use for advertising.

The industry is growing, with the number of wineries tripling in the last decade. Now, a state representative wants to use a part of the wine excise tax, about two cents per gallon, to spend on advertising and help specialists to research and improve Illinois wine.

That money already goes to the state's general fund, so critics worry education and health programs would miss out.

The winery they talked with was Sleepy Creek. Sleepy Creek Vineyards is located at 8254 E 1425 North Road, Fairmount IL, about 35 miles from Champaign.
